Multi-HIT Duck Creek’s Two Gun Red Coastal Wonder CGCA ATT TKI RN FTN LAM250 SWM CHIC – “Iris”
Iris is our first Drentsche Patrijshond, from Two Gun Kennels. She is from the Tule x Fen “Evergreen” litter – we picked her up from Spokane WA on Ellie’s birthday and our lives have never been the same.
Iris is incredibly intelligent, playful, silly, sassy, active, tenacious, joyful, and loving. She’s a joy to have in our lives and brings such a wonderful happy energy into our home. In addition to being a beloved family member, Iris currently trains and/or competes in five activities – AKC Scentwork, Rally/Obedience Heelwork, Canicross, Conformation, and Fieldwork.
As a Scentwork dog, Iris shines. She searches with confidence, joy, and independence – if she looks to her handler while searching, it’s her way of saying “nothing’s here”. Otherwise, she will search large areas and difficult hides without tiring until she’s found source. She searches at a lovely moderate pace, rarely wasting energy or blowing by hides. She is quite talented especially in sourcing – once she is on odor, she can work very challenging puzzles and through a lot of environmental pressure to get to source. She is easy to read, with obvious changes of behavior between searching, sourcing, and alert, and has a beautiful nose freeze and down indication. As of this writing she has 3 High in Trials, 18 top-4 placements, 33 top-10 placements (in an average field size of 24 dogs), and has a qualifying score rate ~20% higher than the average in our region.
Iris’s journey into Rally/Obedience begun with shaping a focused competition heel following Hannah Brannigan’s Awesome Obedience workflow. So far, Iris has shown really wonderful thoughtfulness and body awareness through this avenue. We hope to get her into the Rally and/or Obedience ring in 2024, and in the meantime, have been utilizing heelwork in the field.
Canicross is the sport of trail running powered by a dog, where the dog and human each where specialized harnesses and are attached by a bungee line. Iris typically runs canicross at least 3 times a week, which keeps both of us in shape!
Being an FSS breed, Iris can only show in AKC Open or Match Shows, which are few and far between. The purpose of conformation is to evaluate a dog’s structure and appearance against the breed standard, which is important for the health and long term preservation of the breeds we love. Iris finds conformation boring at best, as it’s a lot of standing around, but she has been routinely complimented by judges for her wonderful expression, balanced front and rear angulation, and stunning movement.
In January of 2024 we finally started seriously pursuing fieldwork with Iris (who was introduced to birds as a puppy, as well as at one NAVHDA training day in 2023). Iris has so far displayed huge drive for birds, and is not sensitive to gunfire or the bird launcher. She is already excelling at hunting for birds before and after the shot – searching passionately yet efficiently – as well as retrieving birds to hand. As of February 2024 she is still learning to hold a steady point, but has shown a natural instinct to do so in and out of the field, so it’s only a matter of time!
